Debra's Column A Wing and a Sign Taking a deep breath I open my eyes, feeling very serene as the meditation ends. My special room and the many cherished icons that I am surrounded by give me a sense of peace. Feelings of happiness engulf my heart. Unawares, my thoughts are diverted outside as I gaze at the dancing leaves of the five tall aspen trees outside. The prayer beads slip through my fingers as I notice a small grey bird perched on the miniature shingled roof of our handmade wishing well just outside the window. There she sits, so still, so quiet and peaceful looking, a bit tired as if resting from a great journey. She looked like a mother waiting for her chicks. So close that I could reach out and touch her, she is a gift sent to me with a message from the other side. But what is the message? Wanting to understand, I ponder my gift. Several hours later I returned to my special room hoping to find this beautiful bird waiting for me, and there she is, still perched so peacefully on the well. Stooping over my table to look at her, the grey-breasted, curved beaked bird watches me through the glass. Suddenly I recognize the message in her peaceful gaze. She is saying “your children are home, rest and enjoy them; everything flows in its due time. This message comes close to the arrival of my daughter from her 3 year stay in Arizona. I am happy and content to have her home, but I realize this too is temporary, so I’m grateful for the time we have together. What a great gift of which I contribute to my grandmother! She was kind and generous, and incidentally raised and loved birds. That afternoon a client was scheduled for a reading. Feeling very blessed for this wonderful gift, it was poignant that another message of nature should appear outside that same window. The reading started like any other, the connection was clear and extremely healing. My client Kathy was overjoyed that her mother gave her many messages and confirmations of her existence on the other side. We could both feel the love that Kathy’s mother wanted to convey; it filled the room and gave us a warm feeling all through our bodies. Then, out of corner of my eye, I saw something fly up to the window. Both Kathy and I looked up, and to our amazement there was a huge monarch butterfly fluttering across the window as if it were trying to get inside the room. It was the largest butterfly I had ever seen! My first thought was that it was another bird; its size was considerable. We both just stared at this beautiful creature, its gossamer wings fluttering so delicately in the air. Kathy turned to me and asked “Is this a sign from my mother?” Before she could even finish the sentence I started to nod my head say, “Yes, it is a sign and your mother is so happy to be here with you today, she loves you very much." Feeling very content with this beautiful vision, Kathy had the proof she needed. Her mother was indeed alive and well. This was a very special day; all around there were signs and messages that motherly love abounds. We both felt privileged and honored to be on the receiving end of such unconditional love. There are so many opportunities to receive communication from our loved ones on the other side. They are speaking to us and offering comfort, in the simplest of ways. All we need to do is stop, look, and listen. Nature offers ample wisdom and with close attention to detail we are only a wing and a prayer away from the solace and validation of your loved ones on the other side.
